summer vacation

Summer may be winding down and kids may be thinking about going back to school, but the season’s not quite over yet; there’s always time for a last-minute vacation. We’ve listed just a few destinations that are great for late summer travel:

Savannah, Georgia

Tourist season in Savannah is usually March-May and September-November, so heading down in August isn’t such a bad idea. It may be hot, but you’ll still enjoy the city’s charm, history, and plenty of things to do. Plus, there will be far fewer crowds and lower prices on airfare, hotels, and attractions.

The Great Smoky Mountains

Head to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and you’ll find ziplines, hiking trails, theaters, caverns, a theme park, and more, making it a great destination for families. You can even head a few miles north to Dollywood to enjoy some authentic Southern music, food, and entertainment.

Disney World

In late August and early September, many parents are preparing their kids for school, which means the popular lands of Disney, Universal Studios, and Epcot are all a little less crowded than they were at the beginning of the summer. You’ll enjoy shorter lines at popular attractions and cheaper hotels – especially those a few miles outside the area.

San Francisco

This California city is known for its beautiful weather all year round, which makes it a great place to visit no matter what season it is. Go for a picnic in Alamo Park, drive over the Golden Gate Bridge, take a tour of Alcatraz, enjoy the energetic nightlife, and more. The city has plenty to offer visitors and the locals are friendly.

Myrtle Beach

If you still haven’t gotten your beach vacation in for the summer, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is a great place to go. Since most people have already enjoyed the sun and sand, you’ll see prices start to dip in the area. Enjoy the popular boardwalk, go on a fishing trip, taste some delicious seafood, and roam the beach town’s many shops.

New York City

There’s something for everyone in New York City, and late summer is a great time to enjoy it. Since the weather is still warm, you can take a nice walk through Central Park, enjoy one of the many outdoor eateries, head to a night club on the roof, or relax on the beach at Coney Island. Attractions like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are also a good choice.
